About Molecules & Empires

Some of the most consequential shifts in power, economics, and geopolitics begin with a scientific or technological breakthrough. This newsletter is about understanding the ones already underway.

I’m Andrii Buvailo, a biotech and artificial intelligence analyst with a PhD in Physical Chemistry and a decade in the pharma and biotech industry. I co-founded BiopharmaTrend.com and have published analytical work on AI-enabled drug discovery, pharma R&D transformation, and competitive dynamics in biotech that’s been cited by Deloitte, Forbes, RAND Corporation, and the European Parliament, among others.

Molecules & Empires is something different, though.

It’s where I step back from the industry beat and look at the forces actually reshaping how science, technology, and money interact. Where AI stops being a tool and starts being an actor. Where a single class of drugs rewrites the economics of the healthcare system. Where aging becomes an engineering problem worth trillions. Where the chemistry behind an everyday commodity built — and destroyed — entire economies.

I write from deep familiarity with science and biotech, but this newsletter isn’t confined to either. It’s a notebook on how breakthroughs create winners and losers at every scale, from startups to superpowers.

New essays are published regularly.
